The Costs of Initiative 2117

I-2117 will harm Washington taxpayers and communities across our state.

It will strip billions in investment from community priorities in every county — like air quality, transportation and transit service, fish habitat, and preventing wildfires.

And it will shift the burden of paying for the impacts of pollution onto local communities and families.

I-2117 would mean more toxic air pollution and wildfires, causing more Washington kids and seniors to suffer from asthma and heart conditions

…and devastate funding for programs that reduce toxic air, expand our state’s air quality monitoring network, modernize school buildings, prevent wildfires, support clean transportation options, and reduce health disparities in communities most impacted by pollution.

I-2117 threatens vital protections for our waterways

…including rivers, lakes, and streams, while ending programs that support fish habitat and salmon recovery…like programs that remove barriers that hurt spawning salmon and encourage landowners to plant native vegetation along salmon-bearing streams.

I-2117 threatens the safe, reliable functioning of our entire transportation system

…cutting one-third of funding for our state’s already stretched transportation plan, making traffic congestion worse and commutes even longer. These drastic cuts would impact every corner of our state, putting major road and bridge projects addressing congestion, safety and freight mobility in danger of severe delays or outright cancellation.

I-2117 removes funding for one-quarter of each ferry as the state works to restore a ferry system already in crisis

…and drastically slashes transit service…like ending funding for the program that provides people under 18 with free transit passes across our state.

I-2117 would hurt Tribal communities by ending a major source of funding for Tribal environmental leadership and action

…shifting the full burden of additional pollution to Tribal Nations and overburdened communities.
